THE PERU BOX

This edition’s selected novel, Red April by Santiago Roncagliolo, provides an unflinching look at a chapter in the story of Peru that is often overlooked by tourists and avoided by Peruvians. It takes place in the waning days of the Shining Path’s reign of terror. While it does not spare readers from the sort of grisly acts committed by that militant group or the military personnel who sought to extinguish its influence, it is propelled forward by an affable main character who is diligently trying to do his job amidst it all. The novel gives us many footholds to understand not only the seemingly incomprehensible actions of the Shining Path, but also indigenous beliefs, and historical figures.

Each of the items in the box are fair-trade and originated in Peru, a country which has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and political instability.
